Fund provides scholarships to deserving high school seniors and undergraduate students in Henry County or the City of Martinsville, Virginia and to students who are children or spouses of Hooker Furniture Corporation (HFC) employees.


Eligibility Requirements for students who are children or spouses of HFC employees:


Be the child or spouse of an HFC employee, who, at the time of an initial scholarship grant, is a “full-time” employee and has been continuously employed for two or more years by HFC.

Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Demonstrate capacity to satisfactorily complete college-level studies as evidenced by high school and/or college transcripts or similar documentation.

Demonstrate financial need as evidenced through completion of a FAFSA form or similar evaluation document.

NOTE: This scholarship is renewable for a period of up to five years and a maximum award of $24,000. Family members of HFC’s Board of Directors and its Officers are not eligible.

Annual DNA Day Essay Contest

This contest is open to students in grades 9-12 worldwide and asks students to examine, question, and reflect on important concepts in genetics. Essays are expected to be well-reasoned arguments that indicate a deep understanding of scientific concepts related to the essay question. They are evaluated by ASHG members through three rounds of scoring.

Many human diseases have a genetic component. Some diseases result from a change in a single gene or even multiple genes. Yet, many diseases are complex and stem from an interaction between genes and the environment. Environmental factors may include chemicals in the air or water, nutrition, microbes, ultraviolet radiation from the sun and social context. Provide an example of how the interplay of genetics and environment can shape human health.

Must have designed an innovative project that makes a difference in the lives of others (This could be a website, series of blogs, an app, fundraising event, etc.)

Must submit an essay describing the goal of the particular project and provide supporting documentation. There is no minimum or maximum word/page count. The essay, idea, or creation must be the applicant’s original work. All submissions must be uploaded no later than 11:59 pm PST on the 20th of each month. The submission window closes starting the 21st and will reopen on the 1st at 8:00 a.m. Students are welcome to reapply each month. Previous winners are not eligible to reapply. Scholarship winners will be contacted via email and must respond within five(5) days of the date of the email to accept the award. If no response is received within this time, another recipient will be selected. Students who have not been chosen will not be contacted.
